Professional Biography:

Judy Rogers Stephen joined the Counselor Education faculty as Instructor in 1996.  Her academic and work experience has focused on student athlete populations and on alternative/complementary counseling interventions for stress reduction.  Her primary teaching focus is on basic counseling clinical skills.  She obtained a professional counselor’s license (L.P.C.) in the state of Arkansas in 1986, and is a member of the American Counseling Association, the American College Counseling Association, and the Arkansas Counseling Association. She has presented several papers to state counseling groups, as well as to regional and national college personnel groups, in the areas of counseling student athletes, freshman year issues, and the use of yoga as an adjunct to counseling.  She maintains a working interest in wellness issues for counselors and clients and teaches yoga as a meditation and self-care skill.  Judy is a Registered Yoga Teacher at the 200-hour level and a Certified Phoenix Rising yoga teacher.

Academic Interests and Accomplishments:

Judy Stephen developed a course designed to fulfill NCAA life skills requirements for freshmen scholarship athletes. The course, which has been taught at UA each fall semester since 1993, promotes a critical examination of selected academic and sports issues that affect the success of the student athlete’s educational and life goals. She also created a course to address NCAA academic policies that guide student athletes into career decision-making early in their sophomore year. In addition to her interest in counseling student athletes, Judy has also promoted the teaching of counseling skills to non-counselors.  She directs undergraduate courses in helping skills for athletic trainers and K-12 teachers.  Judy received the Department of Educational Leadership, Counseling and Foundations Teacher of the Year Award for 1997-1998.
